William Golding Limited was incorporated in 1961.

Its founder, the novelist William Golding, intended the company to be a means of safeguarding his works, and the rights and income accruing to them. William Golding Limited still owns the copyright of the vast majority of the author's works.

William Golding Limited was established as a family company, and has continued to be so. Its first four directors were the author, his wife and their two children. The first directors' meeting took place in April 1962 in San Francisco (in a Chinese restaurant) during a family holiday.

William Golding died in 1993 and his wife Ann in 1995. Current directors include their son David Golding, their daughter Judy Carver and her husband Terrell Carver, and their three sons, Nick, Laurie and Roger Carver. A fresh perspective is provided by the newest director, the silversmith Ane Christensen, who brings her clarity and sense of aesthetics to all the company's activities.

William Golding Limited's managing director is Judy Carver.
