Often the answer would arrive so promptly that the addressee would initially think their letters had crossed. However, he unfortunately did not make copies of his letters, unless they were about something contractual, or about money. The letters that have been recovered, especially those written to his family or close friends, show his personality very clearly: ironic, kind, generous, succinct and polite.

Judy Carver, who is compiling an edition of his letters, and is trying to trace the remaining letters he wrote, would be enormously grateful for any information about letters from him.
