Journal Entry: Easter Sunday

William Golding kept a journal from 1971 until his death in 1993. The journals are unpublished.

11 April 1993

Easter Sunday – Christos Aneste! [Greek for ‘Christ is risen’, a phrase Golding repeated every Easter] We saw and heard the Pope give his blessing in fifty languages. The crowd was the biggest I ever remember to have seen in front of St Peters. I wonder whether the indulgence reaches a television audience? I wonder if the apparent cardinals on the balcony are really security men?

All extracts from William Golding’s journals are owned by William Golding Ltd and no part of them can be reproduced without permission.
