Under Friends we have added a page for Adam Bittleston, Golding’s long-time friend and correspondent.
In 1983 Golding won the Nobel Prize for Literature, now featured under Honours.
“Harbour and Voyage: The Marriage of Ann and Bill Golding” by Judy Carver has appeared in Living with a Writer, edited by Dale Salwak, from Palgrave Macmillan, 2004, pp. 44-55. ISBN 1-4039-0476-6. In this essay Golding’s daughter gives a frank and moving account of her parents’ involvement with literature, life and each other.
Golding’s Sea Trilogy (the combined texts of Rites of Passage, Close Quarters, and Fire Down Below) was made into a three-part drama series for television by BBC2, and broadcast in July 2005. It was shortlisted for a BAFTA and is now available on DVD. To the Ends of the Earth: A Sea Trilogy was published in a new paperback edition by Faber and Faber in 2004. It includes the author’s foreword to the revised text of the three original novels. ISBN 0-571-22321-4.
Progress on other adaptations includes a dramatisation of The Spire to be performed at Salisbury Cathedral in 2008. Work is also proceeding on an opera based on The Spire by the Icelandic composer Sveinn Lúðvík Björnsson.
Film rights in all novels except Lord of the Flies are handled by Faber and Faber.
Film rights in Lord of the Flies are owned by Lewis Allen Productions.
