In Free Fall, Sammy Mountjoy meets Taffy at a meeting for the Communist Party in the late 1930s. Despite being engaged to Beatrice Ifor, Sammy is instantly attracted to Taffy due to her good looks. He describes her as ‘the prettiest girl I ever saw’ and after their first kiss they realised ‘they should never let each other go’. Taffy is more than a match for Sammy and he asks her to marry him. Her response is ‘You cock an eye at another woman and I’ll have your guts for a girdle’.
It is likely that Taffy is based on Golding’s wife, Ann.
