February 2021 News Round-up

Round-up of William Golding in the news in February 2021!

Lord of the Flies was mentioned in Netflix’s new show Fate: The Winx Saga. In the first episode, Bloom tells her parents about the school and they ask her about her roommates. Bloom says: ‘it’s five girls in an enclosed space so it’s only a matter of time before we descend into a Lord of the Flies style situation.’

The Independent recommended the 40 best books to read during lockdown, which included Lord of the Flies. Journalist Ceri Radford writes: ‘never has a broken pair of spectacles seemed so sinister, or civilisation so fragile.’

Similarly, The Times compiled a list of the best 25 audiobooks for lockdown listening and featured The Spire, read by Benedict Cumberbatch.

In the Salisbury Journal, Frogg Moody wrote about the now sadly closed Beach’s Bookshop in Salisbury and mentioned that Golding was a frequent customer when he lived in the area.

For the Guardian‘s long-running series of Top 10s in books, author Lucy Clarke selected the top 10 books about castaways. She included Lord of the Flies and wrote that ‘no list of castaway books would be complete without this 1954 novel.’ Pincher Martin would have also been a good choice for this list.
